E-KRETE™: A Green Solution

Asphalt is the most commonly used material, and an excellent structural paving material, for paving roads all over the world today. While it has proven to be a viable material for decades, it has of late become a cause for concern due to two main reasons — the escalating price of oil and the need for the world to go ‘green’ so that our later generations will be able to enjoy the earth and her beauty as we now do.

Why is asphalt bad for the environment?

Firstly, asphalt is not impervious to damage done to it by water and Ultra-violet (U.V.) which cause surface cracks on the asphalt-covered roads and pavements. Left unattended, these cracks quickly develop into potholes and lead to failures in the base. Moreover, exposed aggregates are easily carried along by rainwater, polluting streams, rivers and seas.

Secondly, asphalt roads are easily damaged by the rigors of everyday usage by the very vehicles they are designed to carry. Engine oil, diesel, gasoline, and brake fluids damage asphalt. Thus, at this juncture, we can see how asphalt-paved roads can quickly degenerate and become hazards to the well-being of our environment and human beings.

Thirdly, asphalt, which is usually black in color, retains and absorbs heat. Most of us would be familiar with how hot an asphalt-paved road can be on a hot day — in Singapore most of us would exclaim how the road is so hot that one can easily fry an egg on it.

How does E-KRETE™ PCMO make roads and pavements ‘GREEN’?

Firstly, whereas asphalt is susceptible to damage by water and U.V., E-KRETE™ PCMO(Polymer Composite Micro-Overlay) is unaffected by both of these elements. As a result, E-KRETE™ PCMO eliminates crackwall erosion that causes potholes. Without potholes, roads become not only aesthetically-pleasing and less hazardous to the environment and human beings, the absence of loose stones and road noise are major advantages too.

At present, the heat absorbed by asphalt on hot days is usually released at night, heating up the environment which then leads to more energy being consumed by households near the roads switching on their air-conditioning. If less heat is absorbed by the roads protected by E-KRETE™ PCMO, it is foreseeable that less energy will need to be spent on cooling.

Thirdly, although this is not an environmental issue, the price of E-KRETE™ PCMO is more stable than that of asphalt’s as the price of the latter is intimately tied to the price of oil. With rising oil prices, the price of asphalt is due to increase while that of E-KRETE™’s will remain unchanged.
